David DePape, the man who assaulted the husband of House Speaker Nancy Pelosi last week, is a Canadian who was in the United States illegally for having overstayed his time in the country, the network reported Thursday. citing immigration sources.
According to , the Immigration and Customs Enforcement Service (ICE) issued an arrest warrant against DePape for the purpose of deportation. This could come after the defendant serves a potential sentence for the assault on Paul Pelosi.
Federal records indicate that DePape entered the United States in early March through the San Ysidro crossing on the border with Mexico as a temporary visitor, said. Canadians generally do not need a visa and can stay in the country for six months.
The Justice Department had initially identified DePape as a man from Richmond, Virginia, in the indictment dated Oct. 31 in a California district court.
Paul Pelosi was brutally beaten with a hammer by DePape when he broke into his home in San Francisco in the early hours of Friday, October 28. According to reports, the intruder frantically asked about Nancy Pelosi and assaulted Paul when he defended himself.
San Francisco police said at a news conference that DePape, 42, confessed he wanted to take the Democratic lawmaker hostage and “break her knees” to show other members of Congress that “actions have consequences.”
DePape was carrying zip ties, duct tape and a rope inside a backpack.
A New York Times report said the shooter also told police he had other victims on his list, including a local professor and several prominent state and federal politicians.
Other media outlets have portrayed DePape as disturbed by conspiracy theories that see Nancy Pelosi as an enemy of the United States.
Was he in and out of the US?
The New York Times article suggests, however, that DePape had been in the United States for years, which contrasts with the ICE report and could be interpreted to mean that he may have been in and out of the country regularly. The newspaper quotes people who knew him who describe him as a quiet man adapted to the free lifestyle of San Francisco, with a hippie air.
The Times reports that in recent years he has been living on the streets, isolated from everyone and immersed in the world of internet conspiracies.
Frank Ciccarelli, a 76-year-old carpenter who makes houses and furniture, told the Times he hired him at one time and he was a good employee, but you couldn’t talk politics with him.
DePape has been charged with a variety of charges, including assault, attempted murder and attempted kidnapping, all of which he pleaded not guilty to at a hearing Tuesday.
After the attack, Paul Pelosi underwent surgery for a fractured skull and other injuries and is recovering.
