The director general of the World Health Organization (WHO), Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus, reported this Thursday that he was preparing to depart from the International Airport in Sana’a, the capital of Yemen, when the facilities were bombed by the Defense Forces. of Israel (IDF).
“When we were about to board our flight from Sana’a, the airport was bombed. One of the crew members of our plane was injured. At least two people were reported dead at the airport,” Tedros told X.
Tedros has reported that the bombing has damaged the airport control tower, the departure hall and the runway. “We will have to wait for the damage to the airport to be repaired before we can leave. My colleagues from the UN, the WHO and I are safe,” he reported.
“Our deepest condolences to the families whose loved ones lost their lives in the attack,” said the head of the WHO.
According to the Yemeni network Masirah TV, owned by the Houthis, at least three people have been killed and another fifteen have been injured as a result of the bombings on the airport. Likewise, it has reported another fatality during the attack on the oil port of Ras Issa.
Tedros has reported that they were at the airport to leave the country once a United Nations mission had concluded to manage the release of some members of its staff who had been detained and after also evaluating the health and humanitarian situation in Yemen.
For his part, the Minister of Foreign Affairs of the Houthis, Jamal Amer, has confirmed what happened and has urged the United Nations and other international organizations to denounce and condemn these events, as it is “a direct affront and a mockery.” towards the UN”.
The IDF has bombed Sana’a airport, other civilian facilities such as power plants, also in the capital, and some of the key ports located in the west of the country. Israel has justified the attack on this type of infrastructure due to the “military” use that the Houthis make of them.
