( Spanish) — There is little left for the citizens of Paraguay to take to the streets to vote for their representatives of the Government in the general election 2023.
Next Sunday, April 30, Paraguayans will elect the following positions: President and Vice President of the Republic; 45 titular senators and 30 alternate senators; 80 titular deputies and 80 alternate deputies; 17 governors; and, finally, 257 titular members and the same number of substitutes for Departmental Boards.
Who are the presidential candidates in the 2023 Paraguayan general elections?
Paraguayan citizens will have 13 different options to choose from in the April 30 elections. Each of them is made up of a candidate for president and another for vice president.

- Santiago Peña (president) and Pedro Alliana (vice president) – Colorado Party
- Efraín Alegre (president) and Sole Núñez (vice president) – National Agreement for a New Paraguay
- Jorge Humberto Gómez Otaño (president) and Noelia Núñez (vice president) – UNACE Party
- Euclides Acevedo (president) and Jorge Querey (vice president) – Political Movement of the New Republic
- Juan Felix Romero Lovera (president) and Catalina Ramírez Alvarenga (vice president) – Humanist and Solidarity Movement
- Luis Talavera Alegre (president) and Celso Álvarez Amarilla (vice president) – National Party UNÁMONOS
- José Luis Felix Chilavert González (president) and Sofía Clara Scheid Vázquez (vice president) – Youth Force Youth Party
- Ócar Cañete (president) and Luis Wilfrido Arce (vice president) – Green Party Paraguay PVP
- Prudencio Burgos (president) and Leona Guarani (vice president) – National People’s Party 30A

Who are the main competitors and what do they propose?
Although there is a wide variety of formulas, the first two are the ones that represent the main candidates for the 2023 general elections.
On one side are Santiago “Santi” Peña and Pedro Alliana, who are candidates for the ruling Colorado Party. On the other, Efraín Alegre and Sole Núñez, who lead the opposition bloc National Concertation for a New Paraguay.
These candidates have a wide lead that sets them apart from the other contenders, according to recent polls.
santi pena – He is an economist and was Minister of Finance in the government of Horacio Cartes. He presents himself as the candidate to promote the comprehensive development of the country.
“Employment, investment in human capital, health, education. The next few years may be the best years for Paraguay. But we have to put all our knowledge, experience and determination into practice,” Peña told .
In January, the United States sanctioned Cartes (and the country’s current vice president) for alleged acts of corruption “that undermine democratic institutions,” the Treasury Department said at the time. This is a statement that the leader of the ruling Colorado Party has rejected.
Ephraim Alegre – He is a lawyer and was Minister of Public Works during the government of President Fernando Lugo until 2011. His government proposal focuses on the fight against corruption to achieve well-being.
“Seventy years we have seen the (official) government. Give the Concertación a chance and we are going to show that we can really see the other Paraguay, that of work, that of effort, a solidarity Paraguay that has a response to the great needs of the people,” Alegre told .
