The popular, internal and inter-party consultations of 2023, prior to the territorial elections, will be held next sunday june 4 and the country’s authorities have taken various measures in order to guarantee the safety of voters and the proper conduct of the elections.
It is worth clarifying that the inter-party consultations are those in which the political party coalitions define their candidates to aspire to a position through the popular vote and, for this year, they will carry them out to mayors (San Francisco and Simijaca, Cundinamarca; Sativasur, Boyacá; as well as in Cocorná, Carmen de Viboral, San Carlos and San Luis, in Antioquia) and for Local Administrative Boards in Bogota.

Likewise, in these consultations it will also be defined who will be the candidate for the Historical Pact in the department of Narino.
It is common for the Dry Law, the one that prohibits the sale of intoxicating beverages during a certain time, is established on election days. However, and for this occasion, commercial establishments that sell this type of product disagreed with the implementation of this measure.

“Maintaining this prohibition, especially in inter-party consultations, whose attendance has not exceeded 2.5% of Colombia’s electoral potential in the last 12 years, affects a huge population that not only works, but also enjoys weekends. It generates a negative impact on the economy, employment and on the nation’s taxes themselves.said the Association of Colombian Bars (Asobares) in a statement, in which they also proposed establishing the dry law from 6:00 am to 4:00 pm on Sunday.
For his part, he Minister of the Interior, Luis Fernando Velasco, spoke about this topic, assuring that, indeed, this is a requirement established in the Colombian legal framework; nevertheless, Velasco assured that, from his portfolio, he would be evaluating the possibility of making an exception or, at least, a custom adjustment.

“It seems that the dry law is not needed, but we have a difficulty because in a strict sense the law of order, but we are studying because participation is very marginal in some specific areas and we, or I would prefer to trust the good behavior of citizens, anyway we are studying that issue“, explained the minister.
For now, and despite the fact that the decree giving the green light to this proposal has not been signed, The dry law would be maintained, not only for the day of the elections (June 4), but for the entire weekend, and would apply in all the towns where the day will be held.
In the same way, Velasco assured that there will be a special plan to guarantee the safety of the mayors who have had to leave the towns where they work because of threats against them.

“The call of all the forces of the country is to respect democracy. Special security meetings have been held with the Army, the Police, the National Protection Unit, UNP, to reinforce the security of the mayors who have had to leave the areas, so that they can dispatch again from their territories.“said the Ministry of the Interior.
