( Spanish) – Colombia will celebrate Mother’s Day this year on Sunday, May 14, thus joining other countries such as Mexico, the United States or Spain that also commemorate the work of mothers in the month of May.
In Colombia, mothers are celebrated on the second Sunday of each May, that is, on the 14th for this 2023. A date that, therefore, varies from year to year.
In 2022, Colombians were able to resume the Mother’s Day celebrations on the established date, after in 2021 the authorities decided to postpone the festivities until May 30 due to the third wave of infections by covid-19.
But, what is the origin of this celebration?
In contemporary times, the origin of the Mother’s Day dates back to May 1907, when Anna Jarvis wanted to pay tribute to her mother, Anne Reeves Jarvis, at a West Virginia Methodist church after her death. Thanks to Jarvis, the first Mother’s Day was commemorated in the United States and in 1914 then-President Woodrow Wilson signed a bill to recognize Mother’s Day as a national holiday.
Mother’s Day in Colombia
The official recognition of Mother’s Day in Colombia came about 11 years later, when then-President Pedro Nel Ospina decreed the national Mother’s Day holiday throughout the territory on the second Sunday of May. under Law 28 of 1925.
However, despite the fact that the date for the Mother’s Day celebrations was established on that date under this law, in the Norte de Santander department the festivities take place on the last Sunday of May, according to reports by Semana and other Colombian media.
