The Governments of Colombia and the United States presented this Tuesday in Bogota the ‘Vida Colombia’ plan, their new cooperation agenda with which they seek to work for life, peace and democracy with social justice.
This was stated by the Colombian Foreign Minister, Luis Gilberto Murilloduring the installation of the XI High Level Dialogue (DAN) in which the US Undersecretary of State for Management and Resources, Richard Verma.

“Within the framework of this dialogue we are launching a historic proposal, which is the ‘Vida Colombia’ strategy (…) that marks a new paradigm of the relationship, the new agenda that reflects the spirit of what we have advanced in these years and reflects the new challenges of the 21st century, a diversified agenda“said Murillo.
The Colombian minister stressed that the objective of this new strategy is to strengthen diplomacy in matters related to “life, peace, democracy in a context of social justice”, as well as on issues of “sustainable development for economic prosperity and social prosperity“.

The main beneficiaries, Murillo said, will be the people who live in the regions, ethnic, indigenous, peasant and Afro-descendant peoples “through a territorial transformation of deep Colombia“.
This plan, with a more social focus, represents a change in the relationship between the two countries that for decades was focused on the fight against drug trafficking and guerrilla groups through the controversial Colombia Plan.

During the XI High Level Dialogue, more than 250 high-level officials from both countries will talk about issues of the bilateral relationship such as rural transformation, peace and anti-narcotics fight.
“Throughout these last months, our teams managed to consolidate a bilateral work plan for cooperation, through 25 thematic axes, 64 work areas and 149 concrete actions“said Murillo.

Verma, meanwhile, highlighted that they will work to promote investment in renewable and clean energy; strengthen the protection of the Amazon with the help of the indigenous people of the region, and the implementation of the peace agreement that the Colombian Government and the FARC guerrilla signed in 2016.
The US undersecretary also highlighted that this dialogue “It will be an opportunity to deepen joint efforts on migration issues in the region“.
“Colombia is showing how migration, when managed in a humanitarian manner and as a region, can improve stability and be an opportunity and not a burden for communities.“Verma added.

At the meeting, which will be held this May 28 and 29 in the Colombian capital, there will also be two parallel dialogues with civil society and the private sector of both countries, with the aim of promoting the exchange of specific proposals and the participation of these actors in the bilateral relationship.
Likewise, The dialogue with civil society will address the issue of climate change and its impact on environmental justice and ethnic-racial justicetaking into account the designation of Colombia as host country of the COP16 on Biodiversity, which will be held in October and November of this year in Cali.
