Well, this concept of the city, which may seem utopian, is the basis of what is known as “15 minute cities”an urban model that is gaining more and more followers around the world.

As its name suggests, is one in which its inhabitants can satisfy their basic needs —work, shopping, education, leisure, health, etc.— in less than a quarter of an hour on foot, by bicycle or using public transport.

In these areas you can carry out your daily activities without having to travel long distances or rely exclusively on a car, which translates into a higher quality of life, less pollution and a boost to local commerce.

Which cities in Spain are approaching this model?

A study published in Nature Cities shows the municipalities and cities in Spain that best fit this model. Researchers have created a digital map which shows the areas of the country that have easy access to basic services.

Among the cities that stand out are León, Santiago de Compostela, Valencia, Madrid, Granada, Málaga, Sevilla, Salamanca, and many more. In fact, you can check the map yourself from any web browser to find out if your city is included in this category.

The criteria used is based on accessibility: how long does it take the average person to walk or cycle to each of these services from their home? The more categories of services that are within 15 minutes, the better the city fits the model.

It should be noted that this analysis has made it possible to identify which areas of Spain are closer to achieving this ideal form of urbanism. The model is not only applicable to large cities, but also to smaller municipalities or metropolitan areas, as well as other parts of the world.
