Western Digital and Sony Unveil First Licensed M.2 SSD Storage Solution for PS5

Western Digital and Sony Interactive Entertainment (SIE) have introduced the first officially licensed storage solution for the PlayStation 5 (PS5), which is now available to gamers around the world.

Is about SSDWD_BLACK SN850 NVMe M.2, a device that allows gamers to expand the console’s high-speed storage capacity for both PS5 and PlayStation 4 (PS4) games, which can be stored directly from the drive itself.

To validate the performance of the storage unit in multiple scenarios and guarantee its potential, “hundreds of hours have been dedicated to testing some of the most graphically rich titles of various genres” on the PS5, as the company explains in a statement.

This hard drive integrates a heat dissipator, that allows the installation to be easier, since it is designed in a single piece. Additionally, gamers can reduce load times with the PCIe Gen4 technology it offers, reaching read speeds of up to 7000 MB/s.


WD_BLACK SN850 NVMe M.2 SSD for PS5 comes in two configurations: 1TB and 2TB. The first has a sale price of €219.99while the second can be purchased for 334.99 euros in the online store from Western Digital.

This ‘gaming’ storage device will be available for purchase at other select retailers in the middle of next month August.
