Webinar "Challenges of non-contributory social protection to advance towards inclusive social development"

The 2024 edition of the Social Panorama of Latin America and the Caribbean analyzes, among others, the challenges of non-contributory social protection policies to contribute to the achievement of inclusive social development in the region in a context of transformations and crises. During recent decades, the region has shown important progress in the construction of social protection systems, and in particular, in the expansion of its non-contributory social protection policies. However, significant gaps persist in coverage, benefit adequacy, and financial sustainability. This makes it difficult to consolidate universal, comprehensive, sustainable and resilient social protection systems, and their contribution to the eradication of poverty, the reduction of inequalities and overcoming development traps in the region. To address these challenges, it will be key to strengthen the design of policies, advance in the definition of a social investment standard for non-contributory social protection and address weaknesses in social institutions. On the path to the United Nations Second World Summit on Social Development in 2025, the identification of the region’s challenges and opportunities to move in this direction is essential. This webinar seeks to delve into this topic with leading regional and global experts.

The event will be moderated by Maria Luisa Marinho, from the Social Development Division of ECLAC
