The Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orbánbrought his show as the self-proclaimed leader of the Eurosceptic radical right forces across Europe to the European Parliament headquarters in Strasbourg this Tuesday. Orbán has starred in a unusual and massive press conference lasting almost two hours in which he has exhibited with his characteristic haughty tone his differences with the official line of Brussels and with the majority of his European partners. He did so on the eve of his appearance before the plenary session to present (three months late) the priorities of the Hungarian presidency of the EU, which has been the subject of a boycott by the president of the Commission, Ursula von der Leyen.
In contrast to the fear and rejection that it generates among the majority of European leaders, Orbán has revealed that will open champagne if Donald Trump wins the election Americans on November 5. The Hungarian Prime Minister maintains that Ukraine cannot win the war against Russia on the battlefield and therefore demands an immediate ceasefire.
Despite his incessant criticism of community leaders, Orbán assures that he does not want to leave the EU but to change it from within. Its absolute priority is to prevent the entry of immigrants, for which it advocates creating refugee camps outside of community territory to manage any asylum request.
“We will open several bottles of champagne if Trump returns”proclaimed the Hungarian Prime Minister. The presidency has called an informal summit for November 7-8 in Budapest, which will be the first opportunity for European leaders to react to the US election results. Orbán assures that his objective is to achieve “a common voice” to address the winning candidate.
In his first term, Trump called the EU an “enemy” and imposed all types of tariff surcharges on community imports. During the campaign, the Republican candidate has avoided supporting Ukraine and has assured that he has a plan to immediately resolve the war.
“If Trump is president, he won’t wait for the inauguration ceremony presidential to take measures to achieve the peace in the war between Russia and Ukraine. It will act immediately. So we European leaders have no time to waste, because there will not be two or three months as usual between the elections and the inauguration of the new president. We have to react, both on an intellectual and philosophical level and in action, as soon as we can,” Orbán maintains.
“Hungary’s intention is to focus on trying to achieve a ceasefire as soon as possible, because We are convinced that Ukraine cannot win that war on the battlefield“argued the ultra leader, who traveled to Moscow to meet with Vladimir Putin at the beginning of the Hungarian presidency, a visit harshly criticized by the rest of the partners. In his opinion, the strategy that the EU is following “is not good” and the only solution is to force dialogue between kyiv and Moscow.
“We have no intention of leaving (the EU). We believe in Europe, we need the EU, we have to maintain it for the future. That is why we would like to change it, not destroy it,” says the Hungarian prime minister.
