US President Joe Biden said Sunday that the country’s differences are resolved at the ballot box and reiterated that there is no room for political violence, during his speech in the Oval Office following the assassination attempt on former President Donald Trump.
Sitting in the Oval Office, which he is using for the third time since taking office in 2021, Biden expressed the need for divided Americans to come together after the assassination of his Republican rival Trump.
“We need to lower the political temperature,” Biden said. “We have neighbors, friends, not enemies. The shooting at Trump’s rally calls on all of us to take a step back.”
“Political rhetoric has become very heated,” he stressed. The shooting that hit Trump, cost the life of one attendee and injured two others “calls on all of us to take a step back,” Biden said. Fortunately, Trump was not seriously injured, he concluded.
He also reiterated that “fortunately Trump is not seriously injured” and said the attacker’s motives are unknown.
Former President and Republican candidate Donald Trump was shot Saturday at a campaign rally in Butler, Pennsylvania. Trump was left bleeding from his ear and was escorted to his vehicle by Secret Service agents as he gesticulated with his fist. The shooter, 20-year-old Matthew Crooks, was shot dead, and one rallygoer was later reported dead and two others wounded.
Biden also said that “there is no place in the United States for this type of violence, without exceptions” and assured that “the stakes of the elections are high.”
Sitting at a desk in the Oval Office, Biden said nothing is more important than “staying united” and claimed that “we resolve our differences at the ballot box.”
Earlier on Sunday, Biden asked the public for patience as “the FBI does its job and its partner agencies do their job,” while saying he had ordered “a thorough and swift investigation” in which investigators would have “the necessary resources,” he promised.
Gun violence is a reality in the United States. Political violence, however, is much rarer. Four American presidents have been assassinated, and several have escaped assassination attempts. Several presidential candidates have been shot, some fatally.
Biden insisted that Americans “cannot allow this violence to become normalized. The political rhetoric in this country has become very heated. “It’s time to calm down,” Biden said. “We all have a responsibility to do this.”
Biden and his campaign team are trying to chart a course for their campaign following the attack on Trump.
Biden and his Biden campaign team is trying to chart a course for its campaign in the wake of Trump’s shooting. The campaign has suspended verbal attacks on the former president to focus on the future. Within hours of Saturday’s shooting, the Biden campaign was pulling television ads and suspending other political communications.
“Tonight, I call on all Americans to recommit,” Biden said. “Hate must have no safe harbor.”
