"We must never allow such cruelties to be repeated"

MADRID Jan 15 (EUROPA PRESS) –

The United Nations High Commissioner for Human Rights, Volker Turk, visited this Tuesday the Sednaya prison, one of the main detention and torture centers of the Bashar al Assad regime, which is located near the capital of Syria, Damascus. .

“This was an infamous prison complex during the Assad regime. It is haunted by memories of the greatest cruelty. It is incredible what human beings can do to each other. I can only hope from the bottom of my heart that this is a “a lesson for both the healing of Syria and Syrians, but also a lesson for the world that we must never allow such cruelties to happen again,” he said.

Turk has begun a tour – which includes a trip to Lebanon – in which he will meet with the new authorities and representatives of Syrian civil society. This is the first visit by a United Nations High Commissioner for Human Rights to Syria and the second to Lebanon since 2002.

The new Syrian authorities, with the head of HTS, Ahmed Hussein al Shara, known as Abu Mohamed al Golani, have received various international delegations in recent weeks to discuss the possibility of establishing ties and recognizing the new government, established after the flight of Al Assad to Russia in early December.

The international community and various non-governmental organizations have insisted on the need for the Syrian authorities to respect the rights of the population, something that Al Golani has promised on several occasions, amid fears of reprisals and discrimination against women and minorities.
