“We live to tell it”, a documentary that gives voice to survivors of attempted femicide in Mexico

The murders of women have provoked numerous protests and have placed gender violence at the top of the political agenda in Mexico, a country where ten women and girls are murdered daily, according to official data.

Femicide is the most extreme and brutal manifestation of violence against women, and it affects all regions and countries. Mexico reformed its penal code to include femicide in 2012, in response to years of public protest over highly publicized cases of the murders of women and girls.

The UN supports government and civil society efforts to end gender-based violence in Mexico through its Human Rights Office in that country with initiatives that seek to improve the investigation of femicides and other attacks on women, in addition to raising awareness in society and urging it to denounce abuses.

Despite this work, there are still many cases of violence that do not end in femicide, but that their victims do not report for fear of stigma or because the legal process is costly and cumbersome, it can last for years and the aggressor is never punished.

Journalist Gloria Piña decided to give these survivors a voice in a documentary that earned her the Breach-Valdez Award for Journalism and Human Rights.
