“We have a chance that this candidacy will prosper and Gerardo will succeed. We support him,” said López Obrador while specifying that the Secretary of Finance, Rogelio Ramírez de la O, is in charge of promoting this candidacy.
When having to speak with other governments to add support to Esquivel’s candidacy, they also have the help of Foreign Minister Marcelo Ebrard.
Gerardo Esquivel’s term as deputy governor of Banxico ends at the end of this year. In this regard, López Obrador explained that you have to think about who will occupy the position.
Alicia Barcena
Originally, Mexico had proposed Alicia Bárcena, former executive secretary of the Economic Commission for Latin America and the Caribbean (CEPAL).
However, Bárcena requested that his candidacy be withdrawn.
The president of Mexico maintained that Alicia Bárcena has experience and all the credentials to lead the IDB, however, for personal reasons she will not continue with her candidacy.
“We had proposed her, but she has a family matter,” López Obrador explained, later detailing that Alicia Bárcena’s husband is not in good health.
