Luis Sobrevia, Researcher and Academic, has become a benchmark in Physiology thanks to his research on gestational diabetes and vascular dysfunction, and today he acts as president of the Latin American Association of Physiological Sciences. In this note, Luis talks to us about his current and future challenges in the matter.
Millaray Mariqueo, Science in Chile.- Sobrevia is currently taking steps forward in the search for mechanisms that are associated with some pathologies, particularly pregnancy pathologies, whose orientation has always been to know a little more about what happens with the physiology of the placenta blood vessels, precisely in the gestational diabetes pathology. And now a little more specific, in gestational diabetes of women with obesity before pregnancy, which is called Gestational Diabetes.
“More recently, we have addressed the question of whether membrane mechanisms occurring in the fetoplacental endothelium are responsible for placental endothelial dysfunction in diabetic pathology, and one of the mechanisms we have studied is intracellular pH regulation. by membrane transport mechanisms associated with the mobilization of protons from the inside to the outside of the cell” specified Luis.
Throughout his career, a phase stands out that made a break in research in 2006, when after 10 years of study, proposed the possibility that gestational diabetes endothelial dysfunction is due to a very specific signaling pathway called the ALANO signaling pathway. which derives from A for Adenosine, LA for L-Arginine and NO for Nitric Oxide. The Alano route has been followed by other researchers in other cell types and other pathologies such as hypertension or obesity.
Chilean Association of Physiological Sciences
Luis serves as Immediate Past President of the Chilean Association of Physiological Sciences and as president of the Latin American Association of Physiological Sciences.
The Chilean Association of Physiological Sciences is already 30 years old, and the Latin American Association is around 20. Today its challenge is to involve as much as possible people interested in Physiology, Cellular Physiology, Systemics and Physiopathology, with the aim of delivering opportunities to people who are members. “We have managed to open possibilities that were previously only for one country, to 11 countries in Latin America and the Caribbean. Now future members of the Chilean Society of Physiology automatically become part of the Latin American Association and therefore can maintain a much broader network in terms of professional and personal development.”
In this, Luis made a call to integrate into these societies “when one integrates into larger discussion groups, one has the possibility of growing in knowledge, finding new development factions and answering questions more quickly, this society is open and is permanently doing a call to the scientific, academic world and even beyond, there are psychologists, economists and engineers who have joined the Chilean and Latin American Society”.
PANAM 2023 is one of the 10 congresses highlighted by the International Union of Physiological Sciences (IUPS). This year from November 27 to 30, its third version will be held in Chile. Opportunity that was granted thanks to an application and competition from the country in 2019, where it obtained the possibility of hosting it in 2023.
