‘We are one step away from lifting a large number of grandparents out of poverty’

This Thursday, May 23, the Seventh Commission of the House of Representatives approved the third debate on the pension reform, which will now go to the plenary sessions of that corporation for processing.

After Congress gave the green light to the project, some voices reacted to the results of the vote that lasted three days. The first to comment on this was the Minister of Labor, Gloria Inés Ramírez, who He maintained that this initiative is an opportunity to dignify old age and transform the lives of the less fortunate..

“The Government is delivering for the country. We are one step away from lifting a large number of grandparents out of extreme poverty, but we are also making progress so that pensions in Colombia become a right. With this reform we also seek equity, to leave a regime of competition and move to a system of rights, where Colombians have true protection for their old age,” Minister Ramírez assured.

The head of the labor portfolio also highlighted that with this reform, subsidies for high pensions are eliminated and the pensions of young people will be protected, thanks to the creation of the savings fund.

“This bill is also an act of social justice, because thanks to the judicious debate in the Congress of the Republic, we are building a tool that will allow us to combat the inequality that hits our country hard,” explained the senior official.

For its part, President Gustavo Petro congratulated the Seventh Commission of the chamber for approving the pension reform.

“Millions of elderly men and women without a pension today will be grateful for the efforts of Congress attacked today even by crime,” the head of state wrote on his X social network account after the vote.

Who also reacted to the House vote was Senator Miguel Uribe Turbay, who wrote that “The pension reform is a devastating blow to the Colombian economy. We must stop it with all our strength, before it destroys the country’s savings and affects the well-being of the people in the long term. Meanwhile, Senator María Fernanda Cabal said that the reform “it will expropriate the savings of 19 million savers”.
