Warner Bros. Discovery increases investment in factual entertainment

Warner Bros. Discovery (WBD) has increased its investment in factual entertainment in India, with plans to offer more than 3,000 hours of programming by 2024, according to Sai Abhishek, Factual & Lifestyle group director for South Asia at WBD.

The list of contents will cover both global and local intellectual properties (IP) in linear lines and streaming platformsAbhishek added.

Abhishek highlighted the significant potential for development Indian IPsparticularly those focused on the country’s rich history, while expressing its belief in the global appeal of Indian factual entertainment.

“I am very confident that the factual entertainment category will continue to grow, driven by the investments made by all players, including us,” Abhishek said.

According to regulatory filings, WBD’s annual expenses in India range between Rs 900-1,000 crore, with a significant portion allocated to content creation.

Beyond its own library, Discovery+ hosts content from A+E Networks, the BBC, and Indian infotainment channel Epic TV. WBD’s factual entertainment channels collectively reach 120 million viewers monthly. Abhishek highlighted that WBD is not only expanding its content offerings but also backing each release with strong marketing campaigns, especially for its original IPs. In 2022, Discovery Communications India adopted a new corporate identity as Warner Bros. Discovery India. The company also distributes channels from its subsidiary WarnerMedia India.

Looking ahead, Discovery+ plans to release several major titles, including Chris Brown: A History of Violence and Harry Potter: Wizards of Baking, alongside popular BBC productions such as Dynasties Series 2 and Frozen Planet II.

Discovery Channel will premiere five new series, including grylls bear‘Jesus: Refugee and Unknown Expedition Series 9 with Josh Gates. The Naked & Afraid franchise will return with Naked & Afraid XL Series 9 and Naked & Afraid: Last One Standing Series 2. Additionally, local originals such as Star vs. Food Survival.

Animal Planet will feature more than 100 hours of new programming, focusing on predatory content and anthologies such as Deadly Strike and Snake Dynasty. The end of the year will also feature the special 50 Days: 50 Stories.

TLC, WBD’s lifestyle channel, will launch more than 100 hours of new shows, including holiday specials for Halloween, Diwali and Christmas, as well as new series like 100 Day Dream Home Series 2 and 3 and Forbidden Love.

In the last five years, the WBD has increased local productions with hit shows like Into the Wild with Bear Grylls and Akshay Kumar and the investigative series My Daughter Join a Cult season 1, focusing on Swami Nithyananda.

The network has covered a wide range of genres, including history and mythology with series like Legends of the Ramayana with Amish, as well as shows on true crime and survival themes, Abhishek said.
