day 189 of war in Ukraine.
The Ukrainian Zaporizhia nuclear power plant (ZNPP), under Russian control, has shut down one of its reactors after registering several bombings in the surrounding areas, the Ukrainian state company, Energoatom, reported on its Telegram account.
“Today, September 1, 2022, at 4:57 am (local time), as a result of another mortar shelling by the Russian occupation forces on the site of the Zaporizhia nuclear power plant, the emergency protection and the fifth operating power unit was turned off“said the company.
The nuclear power plant, the largest in Europe and the third in the world in terms of power, already suffered a temporary disconnection from the network last week for reasons that have not yet been clarified.

According to the company, the bombings also damaged “auxiliary backup power supply line” of the plant, which meant that unit number 2 of the plant was temporarily turned off and later activated with the diesel generators.
Power unit 6 continues to operate within the Ukrainian power system and at the same time feeds ZNPP’s own needs, Energoatom said.
The plant’s Ukrainian staff is doing everything possible to eliminate the damage to its infrastructure, the company emphasized, recalling that this is the second time in the last 10 days that “the criminal actions of the rioters have led to the unit shutdown and station de-energization” in reference to the Russian attacks.
This event occurs while a group of experts from the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) visits the plant after reaching an agreement with the Government of Moscow, which has occupied the plant since March 4 and whose surroundings are subject to attacks. of which Russians and Ukrainians accuse each other.
