MOSCOW, 29 Apr. (DPA/EP) –

The head of the Russian Wagner mercenary group, Yevgeny Prigozhin, has warned to withdraw from the Ukrainian city of Bakhmut, one of the current epicenters of the Ukrainian war, after lamenting a high number of casualties from the fighting and the lack of supplies.

“Every day we have piles of thousands of bodies that we put in coffins to send them home,” Prigozhin said in an interview with Russian blogger Semyon Pegov, specializing in military issues, published this Saturday.

Wagner’s chief, whose forces have been gaining prominence since the start of the Russian invasion, has claimed that the losses suffered at Bakhmut have been five times more than necessary due to a lack of artillery ammunition.

Prigozhin has confirmed that he has asked Defense Minister Sergei Shoigu by letter for new supplies because “if we cannot solve this ammunition deficit, we will have to withdraw or die so as not to end up running away like rats in the end.”

Wagner’s boss has also added that he is openly contemplating the possibility of withdrawing part of his troops in what would mean, in his opinion, the collapse of the Bakhmut front with the consequent impact on the entire line of combat in the region.

The city has been in dispute for months and, according to military experts, the Ukrainian defense has been losing ground, entrenching itself in a small portion in the west of the city.
