The vast majority of the income of the 60 Spanish MEPs (pending the resolution of the dispute over Toni Comín’s seat) comes from public office. In addition to the thirty MEPs who are repeating this legislature, there are also as many who also come from politics, according to the declarations of interests they have to present when entering the European Parliament, and only a handful come from the private sector. The analysis also shows that four MEPs received extra salaries from their parties.
Three of them currently belong to the PP and one to Vox. The one who received the highest remuneration was Antonio López-Isturiz, who is now beginning his fifth term in the institution he joined in 2004. In addition to his remuneration as an MEP, the European People’s Party paid him an extra 9,500 euros per month until May 2022 as secretary general of the organisation, according to the declaration he submitted to the European Parliament.
