MADRID 17 Nov. () –
The president of the European Commission, Ursula von der Leyen, conveyed this Sunday to the Brazilian president, Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva, that the European bloc remains interested in closing a trade agreement with the Mercosur bloc.
“Thank you for your leadership, Lula. The world needs to unite. You have achieved it in Rio,” Von der Leyen noted in her X account in reference to the G-20 summit hosted by the Brazilian city of Rio de Janeiro.
“Europe fully supports its Global Alliance against hunger and poverty. We have also addressed the EU-Mercosur (treaty). It is an agreement of great economic and strategic importance,” he added.
These statements contrast with those of the French president, Emmanuel Macron, who conveyed this Sunday to the Argentine president, Javier Milei, that France opposes an agreement between both blocs.
