MADRID 4 Nov. () –
The president of the European Commission, Ursula Von der Leyen, congratulated this Sunday the pro-European candidate and president of Moldova, Maia Sandu, who has achieved re-election in office in the second round of the presidential elections.
“Congratulations, dear Maia Sandu, on your victory tonight. It takes uncommon strength to overcome the challenges you have faced in these elections,” she declared in a message on her X social network account.
Von der Leyen has celebrated – before the official confirmation of her victory by the Moldovan Electoral Commission – being able to “continue working” with Sandu, leader of the liberal and pro-European Action and Solidarity Party (PAS), “for a future European for Moldova and its people.
Sandu has won the second round of the presidential elections held this Sunday in Moldova with 55.03 percent of the votes (913,982 ballots), according to official data corresponding to 98.87 percent of the votes. Thus, he has managed to prevail over the candidate of the Party of Socialists (PSRM), Alexandr Stoianoglo, considered close to Russia, who has achieved 44.97 percent support (747,003).
During the voting in the first round of the presidential elections, the Moldovan population also approved – although by a narrow margin of votes – a referendum on integration into the European Union. While the ruling party, in favor of the ‘yes’ vote, denounced Russian interference, the opposition has assured that it does not recognize the results.
