The controversy over potentially misleading ads for unlimited mobile data rates continues. Many operators have spent years announcing unlimited data rates that really are not, since they hide behind what they consider “reasonable use” to limit the maximum traffic available for each user to certain GB per month.
In this case, it is Vodafone who has further limited its “unlimited” rates as they have discovered several users in the broadband forum. Specifically, the unlimited rate 5G Vodafone limits data consumption to 300 GB per month. If this figure is close to that figure, an automatic SMS is sent claiming that they have detected “illegal use” and proceed to reduce the speed of the connection.
Customers have confirmed this data by contacting customer service through their virtual assistant Tobi, who confirms a 300 GB limit for unlimited Vodafone Max rates and 400 GB for basic unlimited rates.
The problem with these “fair use” policies is that they are simply based on the data consumed and not on the use of the connection. Therefore, the limit is common to all users, whether they are those who use their connection to work, or those who download content in bulk.
