Visitor arrivals to Macao in June recover to 71% of 2019 level

Visitor arrivals in Macau soared 480.5% year-on-year to reach 2,209,662 in June, according to data released by the Census and Statistics Service (DSEC) on Wednesday.

However, the figure shows a slight decline of 0.2% mom.

The June 2023 figure represents a recovery to 71.4% of the count recorded in May 2019, before the pandemic.

Visitors from mainland China increased 329.4% year-on-year to 1,444,933, an increase of 487.9% in those traveling under the Individual Visit Program.

In addition, visitors to Hong Kong shot up 1,446.9% year-on-year, up to 601,663, representing 27% of the total volume of visits. For their part, tourists from Taiwan totaled 42,964.

Overseas visitor arrivals from outside the Greater China region accounted for only 5.4% of total visitors in June.

In the first semester, the number of visitor arrivals increased by 236.1% year-on-year, up to 11,645,877.

Earlier this month, Maria Helena de Senna Fernandes, director of the Macao Government Tourism Office, stated that the tourism authorities intended to organize more events in the second half of the year, taking advantage of the upcoming travel season to reach an annual target of visitor arrival of 24 million.
