The violence of organized crime in Ecuador reaches unusual levels with this attack in the middle of the city in Guayaquil. In the early hours of August 14, two men threw a sack of explosives that killed 5 people and destroyed a food store as well as several rooms.
Professor and researcher Carla Álvarez, a specialist in security issues at the Institute of Higher National Studies of Ecuador (IAEN), analyzes with RFI the rise of drug cartels in Ecuador, as well as the multiplication of spectacular acts of violence that were not usually seen in the country.
He also describes the application of the state of exception, declared by President Guillermo Lasso on several occasions since the beginning of his term, as “palliative” measures.
