A mayor from western Mexico, who had been kidnapped less than nine months ago, has been shot to death along with her bodyguard, state authorities reported.
Yolanda Sánchez Figueroa, mayor of the municipality of Cotija, in the state of Michoacán, was attacked by gunfire on Monday night from a moving vehicle when she was walking with her escort along a street in her community after leaving a gym, the Prosecutor’s Office reported. state.
Sánchez Figueroa and his escort were seriously injured and died shortly after in a hospital. The politician was kidnapped on September 23 of last year in the municipality of Zapopan, in the western state of Jalisco, and found days later alive.
The murder of the mayor was condemned by the governor of Michoacán, Alfredo Ramírez Bedolla, who announced on his social network account X, formerly Twitter, that state and federal authorities activated an operation to find those responsible for the incident.
Sánchez Figueroa became the most recent victim of violence against Mexican politicians who worsened during the electoral process that ended over the weekend and left at least 33 candidates murdered and another 105 attacked, according to figures from the local civil organization Data Cívica, which monitors political violence in Mexico.
