BUDAPEST, June 2 (DPA/EP) –
The Prime Minister of Hungary, Viktor Orbán, assured this Saturday that “a transatlantic peace coalition” led by right-wing forces could end the war in Ukraine, and has accused the European Union of wanting to “push” the world Western to take up arms against Russia.
In a campaign event for the elections to the European Parliament that will take place on June 9, the head of the Hungarian Executive has alluded to the European right and the Republican candidate for the presidency of the United States, Donald Trump, who could — if he wins the November elections–playing a role in ending the conflict in Eastern Europe.
“At the beginning of the year we were still in the minority, at the end of the year we could be the majority in the entire Western world,” he stated before more than 10,000 followers in Budapest, according to the German news agency dpa.
Furthermore, Orbán has accused the European Union – “a war party” – of wanting to push the Western world to take up arms against Russia. According to him, “his driving force” is the Hungarian-American philanthropist George Soros, who he has said has been working for “30 years” to “drag” the West into a war against Russia, with the aim of “replacing the millions of soldiers.” killed by migrants”.
The president has also reiterated that a ceasefire and peace negotiations must take place “as soon as possible”, and has warned that a third world war could “destroy” Hungary. Since Russia’s invasion of Ukraine in February 2022, Orbán, considered Russian President Vladimir Putin’s closest partner in the European Union, has repeatedly threatened to prevent or ease EU sanctions on Moscow.
Orbán’s party, Fidesz, leads the polls in Hungary ahead of elections that are destined to be the great leap forward for far-right formations in the European Union. However, it is still unknown how this will happen, since, since he broke with the European People’s Party (EPP) in 2021, he is not attached to any group.
