Vietnam’s coconut product exports totaled $900 million last year and are expected to exceed $1 billion this year, according to the Vietnam Coconut Association.

Cao Bá Đăng Khoa, acting secretary general of the association, stated that the country has risen to the fourth position in Asia in coconut exports.

Every part of the coconut tree – fruits, wood, leaves – has a use, he says.

The processing industry has developed about 200 products, such as candies, fiber, charcoal, oil, coconut milk, and carpets, in addition to fresh coconut.

It has invested in production technologies to manufacture international quality products and export to many markets, including the most demanding ones.

Companies exported coconut wood last year, and many are now reporting large export orders for coconuts and shells for handicrafts, he said.

The association is coordinating with various industries and localities to organize activities to expand production capacity and create brands for coconut products.

With proper marketing, coconut products would gain ground in international markets.

The processing industry has developed about 200 products, such as candies, fiber, charcoal, oil, coconut milk, and carpets, in addition to fresh coconut.

The association plans to establish offices in various provinces and cities.

The sector faces several challenges, such as the lack of an independent set of standards and rules for coconut varieties and the traceability of the origin of the wood.

Vietnam has 175,000 hectares of coconut palms, mainly in the Cửu Long (Mekong) delta and the central coast, of which almost 80% are in the former zone.
