Women in Games and Dove have partnered to raise awareness about the representation of women in gaming. From her perspective, there is an oversexualization and female players are not well represented due to the lack of diversity in the industry.
To make their message and proposal known, they created a video in collaboration with the Unreal Engine educational team. It shows the story of Cinthia, a powerful and athletic warrior who stars in a video game. It is made clear that the character is not happy with the image of her and portrayal of her, so she removes her armor, her makeup, and prepares to fight as she truly is.
“The campaign is inspired by a new research study from Dove, in partnership with Women in Games, showing that 60% of girls and 62% of women feel underrepresented in games, and that more than a third of Young women’s self-esteem is negatively affected by the current lack of diversity, while 74% of women want more inclusion of female characters in video games,” said Dove.
The video reached social networks and divided the opinion of the community. For various reasons, the players did not hesitate to criticize the video and attack the company. You can see it below:

Players criticized the video about representation in video games
Part of the community supports the Women in Games perspective, believing that representation is very important in media and entertainment products. However, they disagree with a company like Dove discussing the issue in the video game industry.
Many gamers pointed out that there is already more inclusivity in the sector and that the representation of female characters has slowly changed. Many mentioned Aloy, Ellie, Chloe, Nadine and more leading men to exemplify their point.
The opinion of the community was quite divided, since there are people who believe that the underlying message is important to the community that attacked the position of Women in Games. Others outright mocked the video and asked Dove to stay out of the industry.
Nothing wrong with a game with a diversity of body types, but the phrase “..takes a stand against overly sexualized women in video games” in a market now saturated with female characters like aloy, ellie, chloe, nadine, etc feels tone deaf and reeks of 2012. https://t.co/7PDd5z0gMt pic.twitter.com/2fowVvj7us

It’s amazing how every time they try to make these anti-discrimination issues they end up being more stereotypical than anyone. https://t.co/ThFeQtAjsn
