The latest revision of USB-C increased the power limit from 100 W to 240 W. This new figure will allow high-performance laptops to use the USB-C port for power, as low-power models with adapters already do which are around 65-100 W.
Now, the manufacturer VIA Labs has announced the availability of your USB PD 3.1 (Power Delivery 3.1) driver with support to receive those 240W to through the USB-C connector. The controller is certified by the USB Power Delivery 3.1 standard and can now be integrated into devices such as laptops, monitors, and more.
Specifically, the VIA Labs VL108 claims to be one of the first general-purpose USB PD 3.1 and USB-C DP Alt Mode controllers on the market, allowing you to take advantage of a single USB-C port for data, video, and 240W charging. Plus, it’s backwards compatible with USB4 at 40Gbps. To get the 240 W of power, it supports an input of 48 Volts at 5 Amps through EPR.
The arrival of the first devices with compatibility for 240 W charging via USB-C PD 3.1 is expected to arrive at the end of the year, so it will not be uncommon to see this chip integrated into them.
