New York () – Verizon confirmed that its cell line service is beginning to be restored again following a massive outage that affected some of its wireless customers.
“Verizon engineers are making progress on our network issue and service has begun to be restored,” a Verizon spokesperson told on Monday. “We know how much people depend on Verizon and we apologize for any inconvenience some of our customers experienced today. “We continue to work around the clock to fully resolve this issue.”
The outage appeared to begin around 11 a.m. (Miami time), with approximately 100,000 customer reports in DownDetectora site that tracks complaints about service outages.
Complaints to the verified Verizon account at X show that customers have been frustrated by the lack of cell service and the inability to connect to the network. Many Verizon iPhone customers complained that their phones were stuck in “SOS” mode Monday morning, only allowing emergency calls via satellite.
Verizon has 114.2 million subscribers in the United States.
Although relatively infrequent, cell service outages have caused some widespread headaches this year. In February, AT&T’s network was out of service for 11 hours, preventing many of its customers across the United States from making calls, sending text messages or accessing the Internet. AT&T said an initial review of the outage found that it may have been caused by a technical error introduced by an update to its network. The network went down again for a few hours in June and August.
A telecommunications expert told last month that network outages are usually caused by a combination of three problems: overloaded networks in major cities, software updates that have gotten out of control and various technical problems.
But telecommunications companies are notoriously secretive about the reasons for their outages. So if networks are down, particularly for a few hours at a time, cellular service providers are unlikely to say much about what went wrong.
This can be doubly frustrating for customers, many of whom rely on networks to make a living, including rideshare drivers. They also allow people to access emergency services like 911. And they have connected the world with friends, family and colleagues no matter where they are.
The Federal Communications Commission said Monday afternoon in a publication in X that it was “aware of a Verizon service outage affecting customers in parts of the country” and that it was investigating the cause and extent of the outage.
This is a developing story and will be updated.
