Venezuelan former security chief of Chavez summoned to trial in the US

The US justice system issued a summons to appear in court on Friday for Adrián Velásquez Figueroa, who served as head of the security services of the late Venezuelan president, Hugo Chávez Frías, whose extradition from Spain was approved at the end of last year.

Documents issued by the court of the Southern District of Florida, city of West Palm Beach, indicate that Velásquez must appear on October 14 before a hearing in which he is charged “for crimes related to laundering of monetary instruments and money laundering.”

Spanish justice approved the extradition Velázquez in November 2021.

Although the subpoena suggests that the defendant is already on US soil, the Justice Department has not confirmed the extradition.

The accusations against Velásquez are related to those that weigh on Raúl Gorrínowner of the private television channel Globovisión, and Claudia Díaz Guillén, wife of Velásquez and former Venezuelan treasurer between 2011 and 2013.

Días Guillén was extradited last May from Spain to the US and the South District Attorney’s Office in Palm Beach obtained approval for the woman not to be released on bail due to “flight risk”.
