Venezuelan consulate in Lisbon attacked with firebomb

The Portuguese government on Sunday condemned a firebomb attack on the Venezuelan consulate in Lisbon, amid tensions over the disputed swearing-in of Nicolás Maduro for another term in Venezuela.

“The Portuguese government strongly condemns the attack on the Venezuelan consulate in Lisbon,” he said. the Ministry of Foreign Affairs in Xwho added that security will be reinforced.

Portuguese media said police sources claimed a Molotov cocktail was thrown at the building, which was closed at the time. No one was injured.

The Lisbon Government stated that “the inviolability of diplomatic missions must be respected in all circumstances.”

Venezuelan Foreign Minister Yvan Gil denounced the attack as “fascism” and thanked Portugal for its “quick intervention.”

The opposition, through the group Comando ConVzla, categorically rejected and condemned any act of violence, and joined the call that reiterates the inviolability and protection of diplomatic missions, highlighting the importance of their protection in accordance with the provisions of international law.

On Friday it was celebrated the investiture for a third term of Maduro as ruler after a controversial electoral victory in July.

The United States and much of Latin America have recognized his rival, Edmundo González Urrutia, as the legitimate winner of the election and have accused Maduro of staging a “coup d’état.”
