Venezuela: riots, protests and cacerolazos take to the streets after Maduro's re-election

Hundreds of people took to the streets on Monday, July 29, to protest against the victory of President Nicolás Maduro, which was proclaimed by the National Electoral Council but is rejected by the opposition. Several of the protesters took down posters of Maduro’s campaign and dragged them along the ground or tied them to motorcycles, while others banged pots and pans loudly in protest. Numerous reports of similar protests in various regions of the oil-producing country have circulated on social media, including the toppling of a statue of Hugo Chávez, something that was condemned by Maduro himself. Chavismo, for its part, called on “all the forces of the revolutionary people” to “hold large marches” on Tuesday.
