As we get closer to the start of 2023, new details have recently emerged regarding what will be the new competitive cycle of Counter-Strikein which more teams from each region will have opportunities to participate in international events such as the prestigious Majors.
In the process of what will come with the BLAST.tv Major in Paris and with the aim of speeding up the qualifying process for this kind of tournaments, Valve announced that from now on it will implement its own regional ranking system, just like those used by companies like ESL and HLTV.

The classification to the Major will be more transparent from now on
Based on its own algorithm, this new system will use data such as the winnings of each tournament, recent results and historical crosses between rival squads to determine the scores, all divided into 3 main regions: Europe, Americas and Asia.
“To reduce the burden on Major participants and expedite their qualification to the Major, we will use match results to identify teams that should be invited to subsequent qualification stages,” Valve clarified. “We will update the rankings periodically up to the open stages, in order to determine which teams will be invited to the closed qualifiers.”

According to the available documentation, the approach they are taking to assess the accuracy of their model is to “measure the ratio between the expected and observed win rates in matches.” Thus, the managers will review each week of games in their data set and assign points to the teams using the regional rankings of the previous week.
This model will be used from the next Major, so each team that wants to qualify for it must compete in the open qualifiers to secure their place. This is in stark contrast to the more recent Majors in Rio de Janeiro and Antwerp, which used continental RMRs and the controversial Bucholz system to allocate spots for the international event.
“Our goals for the regional rankings are for them to be accurate, not easy to cheat and have a transparent process. We will continue to experiment, and we think others should, once the code and data are available in our repository,” Valve concluded.
At the moment, Heroic, Team Liquid and Lynn Vision lead as the best teams in each region, while the Argentine 9z squad is ranked 10th in the American continent. It will be necessary to see if this changes on the way to the first big tournaments of the year, such as the IEM Katowice 2023 and the ESL Pro League.
