The Pentagon has confirmed that the aircraft carrier USS Theodore Roosevelt has left the Middle East after being deployed in August due to heightened tensions between Iran and Israel in the context of Israel’s offensive against the Gaza Strip.
“The ‘Theodore Roosevelt’ has departed and has begun its transit to the Indo-Pacific Command area of operations,” Pentagon spokesman General Patrick Ryder said at a press conference on Thursday.
The Biden administration decided to deploy the aircraft carrier in early August amid heightened tensions between Iran and Israel following the death of Islamic Resistance Movement (Hamas) political leader Ismail Haniyeh in an attack blamed on Israeli authorities in the Iranian capital, Tehran.
Washington has deployed an amphibious group, a marine expeditionary unit, multiple destroyers, fighter aircraft and an aircraft carrier strike group (CSG) in the Middle East, a Pentagon spokesman said Thursday.
“We remain intensely focused on working with regional partners to reduce tensions and deter broader regional conflict. The United States continues to work to secure a ceasefire as part of a hostage agreement,” he added.
