The United States Undersecretary of State for Educational and Cultural Affairs (ECA), Lee Satterfield, will be in Brazil from Thursday, July 7 to Tuesday, July 12. As officially reported: “The undersecretary will promote entrepreneurship, democracy and human rights through people-to-people exchanges and public diplomacy programs.” She will visit São Paulo and Rio de Janeiro, where she will engage with students, civil society leaders and alumni from US government-sponsored exchange programs.

Satterfield will open a new center Education USAthe official source on American higher education for international students, with the Brazilian educational group STAGE to promote international student mobility.
In addition, she will meet with the American and Brazilian participants of the Youth All-Stars Abroad pilot exchange, which empowers young women through sports diplomacy.

The American Film Showcase
In Rio de Janeiro, it will open the first face-to-face workshop of American Film Showcase since the start of the COVID-19 pandemic, with award-winning American writer-director Alrick Brown, Brazilian-born filmmaker and visual artist Ivete Lucas, and 12 local filmmakers.

Satterfield will also visit Valongo Wharf (Cais do Valongo), the site of the remains of a major 19th-century landing point for enslaved Africans, and one of eight historical sites in Brazil. Its preservation is supported by the United States Ambassadors Fund for Cultural Preservation.
Her additional engagements will focus on higher education exchanges, English language programs for developing communities, and those that promote women’s entrepreneurship.
