US, UK and Australia sanction Russian hacking network Evil Corp

Oct. 1 () –

The governments of the United States, the United Kingdom and Australia jointly announced sanctions this Tuesday for fifteen “cybercriminals” from the Russian hacker network Evil Corp for attacks on banking entities, government organizations and the public sector.

Among those identified is Maksim Yakubets, who has been at the head of this group for a long time and for whom the United States Department of Justice has offered a reward of 5 million dollars (4.5 million euros).

The United States Department of the Treasury has indicated that Evil Corp is a Russian criminal organization, responsible for infecting the systems of numerous public and private organizations in dozens of countries to steal information, generating losses of more than 100 million dollars (90 million euros).

“This three-pronged action underscores our collective commitment to protecting ourselves against cybercriminals who seek to undermine our critical infrastructure and threaten our citizens,” said Acting Undersecretary of the Treasury for Terrorism and Financial Intelligence, Bradley Smith.

For its part, the British Government has denounced the group’s alleged links with the Kremlin and the Russian Security services, highlighting the “mafia style” in its operations.

For the British Foreign Secretary, David Lammy, the Russian president, Vladimir Putin, has created “a corrupt mafia state” in which he is the central axis. “These sanctions send a clear message to the Kremlin that we will not tolerate these attacks, whether from the State or its cybercriminal ecosystem,” he warned.

Those identified are prohibited from entering these three countries and any assets they have there have been frozen.
