US Treasury discusses West Bank economic stability with Palestinian prime minister

MADRID 22 Oct. (EUROPA PRESS) –

The Undersecretary of the Treasury of the United States, Wally Adeyemo, addressed this Monday with the Prime Minister of the Palestinian Authority, Mohamed Mustafa, economic stability in the West Bank, given the concern about the withholdings of funds collected in his name by the Israeli Government. .

“(Both) have discussed security and economic stability in the West Bank, as well as the Palestinian Authority’s efforts to improve its anti-money laundering and terrorist financing regime,” reads a statement from the US Treasury.

Adeyemo has highlighted the “importance” of preventing “terrorists and violent extremists” from raising, using and moving funds in the West Bank, while he has “noted the progress of the Palestinian Authority in strengthening its regime against the financing of terrorism to continue supporting these relationships.”

On the other hand, they have discussed the importance of banking relationships between Israeli and Palestinian banks for the security and economic stability of the region.

The Israeli authorities collect these funds on behalf of the Palestinian Authority and transfer them monthly, after deducting costs for services such as electricity and water. In recent years, these deliveries have been frozen on several occasions due to tensions within the framework of the Palestinian-Israeli conflict.
