The United States Central Command (CENTCOM) confirmed this Friday that, the day before, the US Armed Forces “successfully” intercepted an attack by Yemen’s Houthi rebels carried out with a ground attack missile.

“At approximately 8:10 p.m. (Sanaa time) on May 23, US Central Command (USCENTCOM) forces successfully attacked a land attack cruise missile (LACM) in a Houthi-controlled area of ​​Yemen backed by Iran,” the US Army explained in a publication on the social network

The reason for this action was the determination that the aforementioned missile “presented an imminent threat to the United States, coalition forces and merchant vessels in the region,” CENTCOM said in the same statement.

“These actions have been taken to protect freedom of navigation and make international waters safer for US, coalition and merchant vessels,” Central Command concluded.

The Houthis, who have controlled the Yemeni capital, Sanaa, and other areas in the north and west of the country since 2015, have launched several attacks against Israeli territory and against ships with some type of Israeli connection following the offensive in the Strip. Gaza, while they have threatened to attack American and British ships in response to the bombings against Yemen.
