The US Central Command (CENTCOM) reported on Thursday that its forces had “successfully” destroyed two unmanned surface vehicles in the Red Sea and a radar in territory controlled by Yemen’s Houthi rebels.
“The unmanned surface vehicles and radar were determined to present an imminent threat to U.S. and coalition forces and merchant vessels in the region,” it said in a statement.
CENTCOM also said that these actions had been carried out in the last 24 hours “to protect freedom of navigation and make international waters safer and more secure,” although it did not provide further details.
Yemen’s Saba news agency has reported that the British-US coalition has launched a series of strikes against Houthi targets in the rebel-held Hajjah governorate.
The Houthis have carried out dozens of attacks in the Red Sea since the start of Israel’s military offensive against the Gaza Strip following the attacks carried out on October 7 by the Islamic Resistance Movement (Hamas) and other Palestinian factions.
The Iranian-backed rebels have controlled Yemen’s capital Sanaa and parts of the north and west of the country since 2015. Since Israel’s offensive on the Palestinian enclave, they have carried out numerous attacks on ships with some connection to Israel. They have also attacked US and British ships and other strategic assets in response to their bombing of Yemen.
