An American F-22 fighter shot down an unidentified flying object detected in northern Canada on Saturday after receiving the go-ahead from Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau.
“I have ordered the shooting down of any unidentified object that has violated Canadian airspace. NORAD has shot down an object over the Yukon,” Trudeau explained on Twitter, referring to the US Armed Forces North American Aerospace Defense Command (NORAD). .
“Canadian and American aircraft were mobilized. An American F-22 has successfully fired on the object,” Trudeau added. “I spoke this afternoon with President (Joe) Biden. Canadian forces will recover and analyze the remains of the object,” he said.
This new object would be flying over the Yukon Territory, a border region with Alaska, at high altitude. NORAD had previously confirmed that it was tracking an unidentified flying object in northern Canada, but no further details have been released at this time.
At this time it is not known if this new object is related to the Chinese spy balloon shot down last week in the Atlantic after crossing North America or to another object shot down on Friday over Alaska. China claims the first was a weather balloon that accidentally strayed.
However, on Friday Washington announced sanctions against six Chinese organizations linked to the Chinese aerospace industry in response to the presence of this balloon and Secretary of State Antony Blinken canceled a visit to China.
