The U.S. Secret Service said Monday it was aware of a post by billionaire Elon Musk on the social media platform X in which he reflected on the lack of assassination attempts against President Joe Biden and Vice President Kamala Harris.
Musk, owner of the platform formerly known as Twitter, posted the post after he was arrested on Sunday a man suspected of planning an attack against former President Donald Trump at his West Palm Beach golf course.
Trump supporter and Tesla CEO Musk wrote on Sunday: “And no one is even trying to assassinate Biden/Kamala,” a post that ended with a raised eyebrow emoji.
He quickly came under fire from X-users on both the left and right, who said they were concerned that his words to his nearly 200 million X-followers could incite violence against Biden and Harris.
Musk deleted the post, but not before the Secret Service, which is charged with protecting current and former presidents, vice presidents and other top officials, took notice.
“The Secret Service is aware of the social media post made by Elon Musk and as a matter of standard practice, we do not comment on matters related to protective intelligence,” a spokesman told Reuters in an email. “We can say, however, that the Secret Service investigates all threats related to our protectees.”
The spokesman declined to say whether the agency had reached out to Musk, who appeared to suggest in subsequent posts that he had been joking.
Harris, a Democrat running against Republican Trump in the 2024 election, and Biden issued separate statements Sunday night expressing relief that Trump was not injured.
