The United States Department of Defense has indicated this Friday that it intends to work with countries that possess nuclear weapons with the aim of avoiding future wars with this type of weapon.
“Despite the challenges in the current security environment, the United States will continue to seek engagements with other nuclear-weapon states, where possible, to reduce nuclear risks,” Deputy Secretary of Defense Colin Kahl said at the Conference. Kahl has emphasized that dialogue, communication and transparency are “important factors” in nuclear deterrence and thus in reducing the risks of nuclear war.
In addition, the undersecretary has mentioned the threats from Russia during the invasion of Ukraine, the expansion of China, the position of Iran and the “possible preparations” of North Korea” as main impediments to the elimination of nuclear weapons, reads a statement made public by the US ministerial portfolio.
“We encourage nuclear weapon states to engage with the United States on risk reduction measures as well as provide transparency on nuclear posture and doctrine,” he added.
Kahl has also pointed out some of the highlights of the Nuclear Posture Review, which the Biden Administration is working on.
Among these measures, the “commitment to nuclear modernization with the objectives of a safe, secure and effective nuclear deterrent” is important, as well as “the taking of measures to reduce the role of nuclear weapons worldwide with a commitment to the gun control”.
“The United States wholeheartedly recognizes and reaffirms that a nuclear war cannot be won and should never be fought,” concluded the Undersecretary of Defense in his participation in the Nuclear Non-Proliferation Treaty Review Conference.
