The United States on Thursday sanctioned the Guatemalan migrant trafficking organization López and plans to impose more arrests and punishments against other gangs as part of the Biden administration’s effort to curb the irregular arrival of people at the southern border.

Blas Neto, Undersecretary of the Department of Homeland Security

“These actions announced today add to a series of measures the Administration has taken in recent weeks to hold criminal organizations and their personnel accountable, including sanctions against Venezuela’s Aragua Train.”

The Treasury Department said in a statement that networks like these put profits above human life, endanger the lives of immigrants and undermine the U.S. asylum system.

Brian E. Nelson, Under Secretary of the Treasury for Terrorism

“The López human trafficking organization sought to smuggle thousands of migrants into the United States through an illegal transnational operation that exploited those seeking a better life for themselves and their families.”

The sanctions follow others recently announced against the Tren de Aragua, a Venezuelan human smuggling and trafficking group, and against Abdul Karim Conteh, a transnational organized crime group from Mexico and Tijuana. Paula Díaz, Voice of America.
