US representative to UN says Albanese is 'unfit' for job after controversial message

Jul 26. (EUROPA PRESS) –

The US representative to the United Nations, Linda Thomas-Greenfield, has said that the UN special rapporteur for the Occupied Palestinian Territories, Francesca Albanese, is “unfit” for the job after she backed a controversial message comparing Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu to Adolf Hitler.

“There is no place for anti-Semitism on the part of UN-affiliated officials charged with promoting human rights. While the United States has never supported Francesca Albanese’s tenure, it is clear that she is not fit for this or any other position at the UN,” he said on social media.

This comes after Albanese endorsed on the social media platform a post by former head of the New York office of the UN High Commissioner for Human Rights Craig Mojiber comparing Netanyahu to Hitler.

“History is always watching,” reads the post, which shows a picture of Hitler above, while below is Netanyahu in front of the US Congress. Albanese reacted by saying that this was precisely what she was thinking.

The Israeli Foreign Ministry had already condemned this behaviour yesterday. “He is once again spreading vile hatred and abusing the memory of the Holocaust. It is inconceivable that Albanese is still allowed to use the United Nations as a shield to spread anti-Semitism,” it said.

Albanese has argued that neither Mojiber nor herself have compared anyone. “The two images expose the political elites of two different historical periods applauding a contemporary genocidal maniac with the same shamelessness,” she explained on Friday.
