Venezuelan citizens residing in the United States will be able to apply for re-registration of Temporary Protected Status (TPS), immigration authorities announced Monday.
Applications must be made within a period of 60 days, from September 8 to November 7, 2022.
“Only the beneficiaries of the initial designation of Venezuela for TPS who were already residing in the United States in March 2021 are eligible to re-register for TPS,” indicates the Citizenship and Immigration Service, USCIS, in a release published on Wednesday.
The Department of Homeland Security (DHS) published the notice in the federal register and last July had extended the protection for those who already have TPS, for an additional 18 months.
The Venezuelan ambassador to the US, Carlos Veccio, explained in a video message that those who are concerned because their application has not yet been approved should not re-register.
Beneficiaries may also request the renewal of their employment authorization (EAD) “if they continue to meet the eligibility requirements.”
However, the DHS acknowledges that “not all people who re-register will be able to receive new EADs” before they expire and argued that it is their own ability to process re-registration applications that expire on September 9. .
The White House estimates 323,000 Venezuelans are eligible for TPS under the initial designation granted to Venezuela. Currently, reports the Administration, there are about 111,700 beneficiaries under this designation.
The immigration entity reports that those who do not currently reside in the US or who arrived in the territory after March 8, 2021 are not eligible for TPS.
