The United States Central Command (CENTCOM) announced on Wednesday the seizure of a shipment of Iranian weapons in the Gulf of Oman that was destined for Yemen.
“The interdiction took place (…) on January 15, along routes historically used for illegal arms trafficking from Iran to Yemen. More than 3,000 assault rifles, 578,000 rounds of ammunition and 23 guided missiles were recovered advanced anti-tank weapons,” CENTCOM detailed in a statement.
The US Army has recalled that “regularly” it carries out regional operations with associated naval forces in order to improve maritime security, highlighting the seizure work, which has allowed the passage of more than 5,000 weapons and 1.6 million rounds of ammunition to Yemen.
CENTCOM prevented 9,000 illegal weapons from reaching Yemen in 2021, marking a 200 percent increase in the number of weapons seized from the previous year.
A US official has confirmed that the Navy helped the French Army in the aforementioned operation, according to what has learned.
