Sep. 3 (EUROPA PRESS) –
The United States has intercepted an Iranian warship that reportedly captured two US drones in the Red Sea on Thursday.
The United States Fifth Fleet has explained in a statement that the Jamaran ship of the Islamic Republic of Iran would have seized two Washington vessels that were operating close to each other in international waters.
Said drones would be unarmed and would take pictures of the environment while patrolling the terrain. “The vessels did not represent any risk to naval traffic and had been operating in the general vicinity of the southern Red Sea for more than 200 consecutive days without incident,” the letter reads.
“At around 2:00 p.m. local time on September 1, the US Fifth Fleet detected the Iranian ship approaching both drones and pulling them out of the water,” the statement said.
Although the drones were eventually released, a Defense Department official from the Biden Administration has told that the incident appears to be an escalation of hostile Iranian actions against the United States.
