US imposes sanctions on hundreds of targets in new action against Russia

The United States and its partners announced new sanctions on Friday aimed at punishing Russia for its invasion of Ukraine, intensifying what is already one of the toughest punitive efforts ever.

Washington takes aim at Russia’s sanctions evasion, its future energy revenues and military industry supply chains, imposing sanctions on more than 300 targets.

The move comes on the first day of the three-day G7 summit in Japan and marks the latest sanctions and export controls against Moscow, which have affected thousands of targets and imposed heavy restrictions on Russia.

“Today’s actions will further affect Putin’s ability to carry out his invasion and will advance our global efforts to cut off Russian attempts to evade sanctions,” US Treasury Department Secretary Janet Yellen said in a statement. release.

The Russian embassy in Washington did not immediately respond to a request for comment.

The United States and Europe imposed economic sanctions on Russia immediately after the start of the war last year and have not stopped increasing the pressure ever since, targeting Putin and officials close to him, the financial sector and Russian oligarchs.

Yet Washington could still impose tougher sanctions, experts say: while the measures have hit the Russian economy, they have so far failed to stop Putin from continuing a war that has killed tens of thousands and turned cities into rubble. .
